What Other Canadian Kids Have: The Fight for a New School in Attawapiskat

This article explores two main themes that emerge from a case study of the J. R. Nakogee Elementary School in Attawapiskat, Ontario. First, it is a critique of First Nation’s education at a structural level, both historic and contemporary, which illuminates the Canadian government’s failure to make significant improvements in the provision of education to Indigenous students. Second, it is a study of social activist Shannen Koostachin, who has led a grassroots, community movement to fight for a new school in Attawapiskat. The article is meant to contribute to the dialogue on the significance of Koostachin’s social activism.
